Message from the Chair

As Chair, I would like to welcome you to the Department of Biostatistics. We are well positioned within a data-rich research environment in the UAB School of Public Health and the broader UAB academic health center. With a dynamic faculty, excellent students, and a very capable staff, we conduct research in statistical methodology and applications. We collaborate with investigators both at UAB and around the world, all while providing an excellent graduate and undergraduate education.

Our department is growing due in large part to the increased need for statistical reasoning in the biomedical sciences. Currently, we are looking to grow strategically in the following ways:

The proposed DrPH degree will be one of only eight CEPH-approved DrPH programs in biostatistics in the U.S.

  • Increase the number of faculty, doctoral students, and support staff; and
  • create a biostatistics neuroscience research and training program.

We have created a Doctorate in Public Health (DrPH) degree with concentrations in clinical trials, statistical genetics, neuroscience, cardiovascular disease, epidemiology, healthcare evaluation or health behavior.  The application process will be made available for the 2019-2020 academic year.

We would also like to become more connected and visible. To help improve communication, we are actively working on the Department's website in order to make it a more effective medium with which to disseminate news and information that will showcase the great things happening here. In addition, we would like to ask our alumni to get in touch with us. Please provide us with information about yourself, what you presently do, and ideas you may have for the department. We particularly need information from degree recipients prior to 2005. We welcome you to update your current contact information here.
