Back of the Envelope Award - Staff Edition

The Back of the Envelope Awards© were launched in 2009 as a mechanism to stimulate and support creativity at the School of Public Health that can lead to the next generation of intellectual excellence and productivity. These awards were limited to faculty members to allow the time to more fully explore and develop a hunch, a notion, or an "Ah-ha". For faculty members time well spent could lead to a new line of inquiry, new collaborations, a novel educational plan/program, a dead end, or a Black Swan, outcomes that are at once unpredictable and therefore worthy of support.

This year the School of Public health will again open the Back of the Envelope Awards© Staff Edition to all full time staff. The goal of this program is to encourage staff members to explore interesting, funky, or edgy ideas and hunches that can impact public health research, education, or practice, or can improve the operations and image of the UAB School of Public Health. Recipients will receive up to $5,000 to costs incurred to pursue the idea in the application.

Applications for a Back of the Envelope Award© Staff Edition must be submitted on the back of a number 10 white envelope, either typed or handwritten. Name, department, and phone number should be on the opposite side of the envelope. The application should include the necessary and relevant detail to allow a panel of judges to make appropriate determinations of merit. No supporting documents, references, or budget are permitted.Only one envelope should be submitted; copies will be made as needed by the Dean's Office

Recipients will be recognized at an award reception. At the conclusion of the award period each recipient is expected to give one or more Back of the Envelope Awards© Staff Edition seminars organized by the Dean's Office to share and disseminate what became of the back of the envelope idea.
